Title and Audience: Composing with Finale, Music, 6-8
Objectives: Standard 4.0: Composing (instrumental music 6-8) create an original melody;
Description: Using Finale music notation software the students will a create 4-8 measure piece for their instrument. Students may use their instruments to create the melody, but still must notate it on Finale. Once everyone has completed their composition the students will share them with each other. They may use the playback feature, have the class play them from the SMARTboard or print copies and conduct their composition.
Scaffolds: The teacher could show and play examples of some melodies written by other composers to help the students understand how melodies are constructed.
Technology to Support Authentic Instruction: Technology, specifically Finale, will allow students be creative in their compositions. Also, learning a new program will be both challenging and complex. The students will use Finale in conjunction with computers and a SMARTboard if they so choose.
